lacuna [luh-kyoo-nuh], n. a gap or missing part, as in a manuscript, series, or logical argument.

About

I've been in fandom for quite awhile now; maybe not as epicly long as some people, but certainly a fair amount of time. Roughly nine years at the time of writing this. I discovered my first fanfic sometime in early April 2000 right after GundamWing started airing on American television; after that, I never looked back.

So I've been reading fic for a pretty long time, and because I've also had a lot of free time over the years, I've read a lot. It's not uncommon for me to read anywhere from twenty to fifty fics a day, for weeks straight at a time. And I'm not incredibly picky over what I'll consider a favourite. If I like something well enough, chances are I'll bookmark it in some kind of way.

This isn't really a fic list about quality. Sure, I have standards, and I'm not going to list some barely legible, all netspeak or horribly misspelled fic, but I don't demand perfect grammar and spelling. As long as a fic doesn't look as if it's never even heard the word spellchecker, I can overlook a typo here and there.

And, when I've devoured all the excellent/great/good stuff, and I desperately still want fic to read for whatever reason, then I'll move on to the decent and slightly less than decent fic. Or sometimes a fic will be subpar but will have such an excellent plot or characterization that I like it a lot anyways, and so it gets added to the list.

Then there's also the stuff I read in my early days of fandom and thought was literary genius, only to take a look at it three years later and wonder what the hell I was thinking. Most of those fics won't be included, but some of them I have very fond memories of, and so they get added too.

In short, if you're looking for a high-quality rec list, this definitely isn't the place to be.

Preferences

Like everyone else, I have my own personal biases and preferences for the fanfiction I read. I'll read nearly anything other than genderbending and/or mpreg if it sounds interesting enough, but I have a huge soft spot for hurt/comfort, angst, whump, and/or father/son relationships. You'll find a lot of that here.

I also have my own pairing and character preferences of course, but I rarely hate characters or pairings, so again, if it sounds interesting enough I'm likely to read it even if the pairing/character doesn't do much for me. However, as I noted on the main page, the bulk of stuff you'll find here is slash and gen. My introduction to fandom was slash, and I spent many years reading mostly that before I developed a craving and love for genfic. I do branch out to het occasionally, but I'm so much more picky in my het fic standards which is why there is little here.

Site

I have, for some three years and odd months now, maintained something of a "fic list post" over on my livejournal, listing all the fics that I put into my lj memories. The memories feature has no real way to organize things efficiently, and after six months of never being able to find fic I wanted, the post was created. It only took me another six months to split the post into two, due to livejournal's post size limits. After that I didn't put much effort into maintaining the posts, because I knew I'd end up having to split it yet again and it didn't really seem worth the hassle.

I spent a few months toying with the idea of moving the posts over to a website, but the sheer size of the already existing list put me off, never mind all the fics I hadn't added. Still, with a little prodding from kurafufu after she'd updated her own fic rec site, I finally decided to go ahead with it. Thus, Lacuna was born.

Owner

I am a strange twenty-three year old who goes by the name of replica these days. I move in and out of fandoms with ease and speed, and even read here and there in a few fandoms where I've never dealt with the source material at all. I like a lot of slash and gen, and I also like a lot of crazy dark things that have delicious mindfucking angst. I am also most likely not interested in being your friend just because we share fandoms or fic tastes. Please go read some fic and leave me alone D:
